STARS Student Receives National Award from Citizen Schools

Scott Heggen, a PhD student in the College of Computing and Informatics, was honored on August 21st with a National Presidential Service Award presented by Citizen Schools.  Scott is a Graduate Assistant in the STARS Computing Corps project and developed a 10-week apprenticeship on mobile app development (MAD  Science), designed to engage middle school students with science and technology through the sensors in mobile phones. Through a partnership with Citizen schools, Scott has guided the development and facilitation of the MAD Science apprenticeship at Citizen Schools’ after-school program for five semesters, as well as three summer camps through Camps on Campus.

Scott also serves as the STARS Corps Leader, where he leads multiple groups of STARS students in developing partnerships with their community and delivering computing concepts. The STARS Computing Corps is an organization of over 40 colleges and universities in the United States that facilitates student-led regional engagement to grow a larger, more diverse, computing workforce.  The Corps has reached over 46,000 K-12 students to ignite excitement in pursuing computing as a college major and career option.

This engagement with younger students also develops college students with deep technical skills and broad leadership abilities.  The National Presidential Service Award is a well-deserved tribute to the countless hours Scott has devoted to civic engagement and service to the field of computing.
